As I was asking the Lord to help me find something in the house the other day, I realized that basically what I was doing was praying — talking to God. You see, I believe that God is always with us (Matt.28:20), and if He’s constantly with us, we might as well be talking to Him.
I think I probably started this when I was young. My neighbors were three boys of various ages, mine being in the middle somewhere, and they had a basketball goal on the street in front of their house. We played there a lot and frequently an outcry of “CAR!” would be shouted whenever a vehicle would come around the corner. Quickly we’d move out of the way.
Often I would go on the street by myself and just shoot hoops and practice layups. At these times, I tended to talk to God about all the stuff going on in my life — school, parents, boys — you know, girl stuff. I was a very shy person at the time and didn’t have a best friend, so God became my Best Friend. We talked and shot hoops together a lot.
We just had simple conversations.
Conversations are simply an “informal interchange of thoughts and information” according to dictionary.com. I never figured that I was “praying” to God, I just shared my teenage hopes, dreams, fears, and crazy imaginations with Him. And this relationship continued on for most of my life.
As I grew up, I wasn’t a religious person necessarily, and, no doubt, I didn’t talk to God every day. But if there was an important exam at college or some strange situation I may have been in (like being in room with a bong and a tarantula – don’t ask!) I typically had a brief conversation with Him! And I always felt like He heard me and listened. (Ps. 4:3)
Psalm 145:18 says, “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.”
Nowadays, whatever I may be doing — working, driving, washing dishes; or whatever I may be feeling — tired, afraid, worried, happy, I am likely going to be talking with God at some point. I try to at least.
Once again, it’s pretty simple, It may be a conversation thanking Him for seeing an amazing sunset, or asking Him to help me fix the printer, or possibly trying to remember where I put something in the house!! Just open chatting together about anything, that’s all.
So dear reader, have you had any good conversations with God lately?
